Seattle, WA (09/05/08)
On Wednesday the Seattle Speed Team Handball Club announced their
open team
handball practice sessions at the Hiawatha Community Center in
Seattle, WA.
These team handball practices are open to anyone who wants to drop
in and
play the game of team handball. They will take place on every
remaining
Tuesday in September from 7pm - 9pm. The first of these will take
place on
Tuesday September 9th at 7pm. This gives the communty and
opportunity to
come out and get involved in the emerging excitement with Team
Handball.
All ages and genders are encouraged to attend.
Several big announcements regarding the club and the future
direction of
the team will be made during the first meeting. The interest level
in the
Seattle-Tacoma area regading Team Handball has been higher than
the Seattle
Speed could have ever predicted. "We are expecting at least 40
people to
turn out for the first meeting and as many as 60, says Speed owner
TJ
Ogden." The first session will be more of a "meet and greet and
familiarization with Team Handball" than a full blown practice.
However,
everyone should still expect to work-out and toss around the ball!
The
Seattle Speed Team Handball Club looks forward to seeing everyone
there!

Vashon Island Game -
The game will be hosted by Bjoern Meinhardt at 3pm on Sept
6th (sat) at the
Vashon Island
Court (outdoor). Everyone is invited and I need you
to respond to this email if you plan to attend! Currently we
have 9 definites and several maybes. The Vashon court
information will be provided by Mr. Meinhardt. Everyone is
encouraged to attend to have some fun and practice on some
handball skills. Unfortunately, myself will not be able to
attend due to a work assignment. However you can still reach
me for any questions or concerns or reach Bjoern. We will
have people coming up from Portland and possibly down from
Vancouver for this
open game.
I hope that we set an attendance record for this game! If
the weather is bad, then the game will not take place.
Otherwise, be ready for some action!
*I need everyone who plans to attend, to please email me and
let me know*
I need to get a head count.
Seattle Speed First Practice -
I had hoped to have a facility nailed down by last friday.
Unfortunately 3 facilities did not get back to me. I have
also received some assistance from several people in
acquiring a facility. It looks as though we are simply
waiting for which facility will call first. I expect to have
this completed by tuesday afternoon. There are currently 5
different gymnasiums in the Seattle area that are
possibilities. Either way, DEFENETLY plan to be practicing
handball for the Seattle Speed on Tuesday Sept 9th and 7 pm.
I will send out an email when the facility is finalized.
However, on a side note, I have received an offer from one
gymnasium to host a tournament possibly in december. We
should keep this in the back of our minds and see how our
team progresses.
Equipment -
I have received at least half a dozen emails from players
asking about equipment. The Vashon Island game is an outdoor
event, so dress accordingly and wear anytype of sports
sneakers. For indoor practices what works best (other than
handball shoes) are
indoor track
shoes, basketball sneakers or any light weight sports
shoe. The lighter the weight, the better, but you also want
good traction as you will be running and jumping. Nothing
else is required.

PRESS RELEASE

Organized Team Handball returns to the Seattle
area! The Seattle Speed Team Handball Club has spent the past
few weeks re-organizing handballers in the Puget Sound and
Cascade region to form the Seattle Speed. The Olympics were the
“spring board” that has accelerated the formation of the club
says team owner, coach and player TJ Ogden.
“We are finally able to get the word out to
everyone about this exciting sport. The prospects that we have
for the Seattle Speed are endless. Now that Team Handball has
been re-certified by the US Olympic Committee, we once again
have attainable goals that extend beyond borders,” says Ogden .
However, for the Seattle Speed it all begins
with the first practice which will begin on Tuesday September
9th at 7:00 PM at a location that will be announced this week on
seattleteamhandball.com. Finding a location that will allow a
non-affiliated organization to use its’ facilities has proved
difficult for the Speed.
Ogden continued by saying, “the huge amount of
enthusiasm and interest in our team has exceeded our
expectations. We are currently forming a men’s and women’s team.
The amount of people who have pledged support and interest has
exceeded 30 in the last 2 weeks. If the interest continues to
grow from outside of Seattle, we may work to form a second men’s
team which will accommodate those from outside of the greater
Seattle-Tacoma area, such as Portland , Vancouver and Olympia .”
The Speed already have plans to play in several
tournaments in the United States and Canada . However, their
attention has shifted to the formation of a North American Team
Handball League that is being pioneered by TJ Ogden. The
proposed league would organize the currently existing teams
around the country into regional groups of play. The league
would not be a profit making league, but simply a national
league of play. This proposed league could help in forming the
US National Team and would help in crowning a true national
champion.
“Our true goal is to spread the knowledge and
excitement of team handball and provide more playing opportunity
to players in North America in conjunction with the new and
exciting prospects of the US Team Handball Federation.”
An open team handball game will take place on
September 6th on Vashon Island. It is open to all who want to
participate. For more information about this event or the
Seattle Speed visit seattleteamhandball.com or email info@seattleteamhandball.com.
